Toyota introduced the third-generation 4Runner. The 4Runner receives a complete redesign for 1996 which includes all new engines, chassis, interior and exterior styling, enhanced safety equipment and added utility. It is the first 4Runner to not share either body panels or a frame with Toyota's compact pickup trucks. Buyers could now choose the two engine options between a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine that created 150 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.4-liter V6 that offered 183 hp and 217 lb-ft of torque. As for safety features, The 1996 4Runner was also the first year that dual airbags, four-wheel ABS, side-door impact beams, and auto-locking/emergency locking seatbelts became standard. The 1999 4Runner received a redesigned front bumper, valence cover and grille with new multi-reflector headlights with an auto-off function. Interior amenity upgrades include an overhead console with a garage door opener/sunglass holder, a new center console box with dual cupholders and two power outlets in the center cluster. The 4Runner's instrument panel receives a digital LCD odometer and dual trip meter. Toyota's 4WDemand shift-on-the-fly engagement system comes standard on all four-wheel drive 4Runner models. A One-Touch Hi-4 switch, available exclusively on 4Runner Limited models, makes shifting into high-4WD as easy as a touch of a button. The 4Runner Limited models received a new multi-mode 4WD system as standard. The new multi-mode 4WD feature is actually a full-time all-wheel-drive system with 2WD capability. It may be used in normal driving conditions on all types of roads from dry, hard surface roads to wet, icy or snow-covered roads. The 2001 4Runner is now offered in two trim levels - SR5 and Limited - and has received a modified front grille and taillight treatment. Inside, for added convenience, power door locks are now standard on all models and a new air conditioner control panel is more user-friendly. Also standard are a pre-wired trailer hitch harness ready to accommodate the up to 5,000 pound towing capacity and also the standard anti-lock brakes now come with brake assist. The 2001 4Runner is now exclusively powered by a mighty 3.4-liter V6 engine with dual-overhead cams paired with a standard automatic transmission. The five-speed manual transmission has been discontinued.
