Nikšic is located in Nikšic plain, at the foot of mount Trebjesa. It is the center of Nikšic municipality, which is the largest municipality in Montenegro by area. Nikšic is the second largest city in Montenegro, after Podgorica, and is an important industrial, cultural, and educational center. The first settlement in the area of modern-day Nikšić is thought to be formed in the 4th century, as a Roman military camp.
