Let’s take a look at the Peltor Comtac IV headset system. My particular model is the Dual Communications version. These headsets were designed as a hot weather version of Comtacs, and as a Floridian, I believe this was the obvious choice for a headset. My first impression of this headset is very positive. It is lightweight, easy to keep on your head and is not overbearing like your standard Comtac IIIs. I only have experience with these headsets so far as hearing protecting for sound amplification. This headset is a little bit controversial in that: there is little information about them out there and that they are unconventionally designed. The design is in a horseshoe configuration that fits above your ear with an electronic earbud that goes directly into your ear canal. Although the design itself is strange, it lends for very comfortable wear and usage. Others have complained about the electronic earbud system being uncomfortable to use, however it takes some time to get used to. As a communications headset, I cannot attest to any issues or praises others have brought up, however, as hearing protection and based on my experience so far, it works well. Initially, I had issues with increasing sound amplification, but that was because I was ignorant to the fact that it has a boost volume setting. The boost setting allows to increase the noise amplification to the level of Comtac IIIs on highest settings. As for sound clarity, I believe it is about on par, if not better than Comtac IIIs. The headset itself is not a cheap headset, new you are looking to spend around 688-750+ USD, for single communication and dual communications respectively. I was fortunate enough to get mine for 550 dollars for almost new condition. So far, I have little issues with the high price because of the thought process and engineering that went into these headsets. They are lightweight and makes sense for usage in hot environments.
