This was preceded by PM Modi setting the stage for the government's offensive making a special mention of "the dark days of Emergency" in his customary speech before the commencement of the new Parliament session. The Government and Opposition are locked in a face-off after the ruling NDA decided to renominate Om Birla for the post of Speaker while not deciding on the post of Deputy Speaker. Earlier, the Government reached out to the Opposition to arrive at a consensus for the post of Speaker, but the Opposition – combative since its strength has gone up – insisted that the government give a commitment on giving the post of Deputy Speaker to the Opposition. This has resulted in the Opposition fielding its own candidate, K Suresh, resulting in an election for the post for the first time since 1952.
