Various of of paramilitary soldiers keeping watch in deserted streets STORYLINE Police fired tear gas to quell protests in downtown Srinagar, capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir on Monday as separatists called a strike to protest against the deaths of two people in clashes with soldiers. Government forces quickly dispersed a few small protests against Indian rule at four places in the Himalayan region. Protesters gathered in downtown Maisuma district and were throwing stones at security forces who responded with stones and tear gas. Soldiers were keeping watch in deserted streets, while thousands of police and paramilitary soldiers patrolled. Shops and government offices remained closed, streets were deserted and public transport stayed off the roads. The strike was called by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Kashmir's main separatist alliance. A 25-year-old man died on Saturday, days after he was beaten by paramilitary soldiers in an anti-India demonstration. Another person was killed and five people were wounded when soldiers opened fire on protesters on Sunday. Anti-India sentiment runs deep in Kashmir, which is divided between India and Pakistan and claimed by both in its entirety. Separatist politicians and armed militants reject Indian sovereignty in Kashmir, and want to carve out a separate homeland or merge the Himalayan region into Pakistan. More than 68,000 people, mostly civilians, have died since the start of the rebellion in 1989.
