Adirondack Carousel - The Carousel Mechanism Arrives - April 23, 2012

On a mildly snow covered day in April, Monday April 23, 2012 to be exact, Brian R. Loranger, owner Carousels USA of San Antonio, Texas arrived in Saranac Lake, N.Y. with his truck pulling the carousel's 3500 pound metal centerpiece as if it were a trailer, as indeed it was during the ride from San Antonio, Texas. His employee Louis drove a Budget Rent A Truck filled with all of the metal parts that would be suspended from the carousel's turning centerpiece. The only components of the carousel's metal framework that were not delivered that day were the metal frames which would hold the floorboards of the carousel. These metal frames had previously been shipped to Spencer's Boat Works of Saranac Lake, N.Y. so that the finished wooden flooring of the carousel could be attached to framework of the carousel's floor, and would be ready and awaiting attachment to the carousel at the time of the carousel's assembly. The trucks arrived in Saranac Lake, N.Y. approximately 10 a.m. on Monday April 23, 2012 and by early Wednesday afternoon, April 25, 2012, the carousel was completely assembled, wired, and tested without passengers. There were ten metal floor frames, nine of which contained only the carousel's floorboards, and the last of which not only contained the carousel's floorboards but also an attached custom made boat complete with working bow and stern electrical lights. This boat was built with a detachable bench which could be removed to accommodate wheelchair bound riders. Wheelchair bound rides would be securely held in place by a system of strong cloth restraints, much like that found on the winch of a boat trailer. Wednesday morning, April 25, 2012 saw the parade of carousel animals being moved from their former storage site in a building across the street (owned by Sturdy Supply) to the carousel building. Both adult volunteers and students from the Saranac Lake High School participated in this event. In the early afternoon of Wednesday April 25, 2012, Marge Glowa took the first two rides ever on the carousel after it had been assembled in Saranac Lake while standing in the boat (the bench had not yet been placed within the boat). Shortly after Marge's two short rides in the boat, the first animal to be mounted on the Adirondack Carousel, namely Ranger the Raccoon, carved by Carl Borst and sponsored by Stewart's Shops was attached. Marge Glowa then took two short rides on Ranger. Indeed I have already placed another video on You Tube showing that event. Stay tuned for another video in the saga of "Build A Carousel" which will show the construction events which occurred on Tuesday April 24, 2012 and Wednesday April 25, 2012. Musical selections for this video, in the order in which they were played, include (1) Royal Trumpeters played by a Verbeeck 165 Band Organ, and (2) Ben Hur Chariot Race played by a Wurlitizer 157 Band Organ.
