Don't Underestimate the Value of Ancient Training Methods!

The kettlebell halo is a movement that belongs to the “shield cast” family of exercises. This includes movements like the gama cast or the macebell 360. I was a little surprised when I shared my last short about kettlebell halos, as some of the comments were dismissing it as a “pointless” exercise. Or even claiming that it was “bad for the elbows!” I understand that people are tired of seeing goofy and strange exercises on social media that are only there to get attention. But we shouldn’t throw the baby out with the bath water! Training with gada or Indian clubs is actually a practice that dates back centuries. It mimics the way you might swing a sword and it develops amazing core strength, shoulder mobility, and throwing mechanics. Check out Mark Wildman’s channel for much more on this! The light weight used with the kettlebell halo is perfect for longer sets - building amazing strength endurance, providing a gentle stretch for the lats, and nourishing the tendons with blood. The point is: don’t dismiss exercises right away, just because they don’t conform to modern barbell training. It’s the same attitude you see in martial arts. So many people dismiss Tai Chi, for example, because it “wouldn’t work in MMA.” I hate those videos where Tai Chi teachers get “humbled” by competitive fighters. They completely miss the point. The way Tai Chi movements and positions teach you to relax the body, to breathe into movements, to generate different types of power by correctly aligning the joints…. There’s some incredible knowledge and skill here that can benefit anyone. And the understanding of anatomy and biomechanics is incredible given how old the practice is. Same goes for yoga. I’m not a fan of the push-back against yoga! You just need to look deeper. So, yeah. I know “old” doesn’t automatically mean “good.” But don’t dismiss these lesser-known styles of training. They contain some real gems of wisdom. Adapt what is useful and all that! #functionalstrength #functionaltraining #steelclub #kettlebells
