3 O'CLOCK BLUES - B.B. KING (1951) on RPM 78RPM - his first hit record (Three O'clock Blues)

Three O'clock Blues was written and first recorded by Lowell Fulson in 1946. The song was released two years later on the Down Town record label becoming Fulson's first hit record. In September, 1951, B.B King recorded the song as 3 O'clock Blues at a makeshift studio at the YMCA in Memphis, Tennessee. The studio was improvised and consequently lacked the recording qualities and sound of proper studios. 3 O'clock Blues was released in December on the RPM label, a subsidiary of Modern Records. It was his sixth release on RPM after a short 2-record stay at Nashville's Bullet Records. The label credited the songwriting of 3 O'clock Blues to King, although, more correctly, it was only King's rendition of Fulson's 1946 song. 3 O'clock Blues showcased BB's interplay between his vocals and guitar for the first time. It was a record that caught the attention of listeners and by the end of the first month of release, the song had charted on Billboard. It became B.B. King's first major hit, enjoying a stay at Billboard's #1 spot for five weeks and staying on their charts for a total of 17 weeks. It was the song that truly launched what would become an incredible career for B.B. King. B.B. King continued to perform 3 O'clock Blues at his concerts throughout his career and re-released two renditions; the first accompanied by Bobby 'Blue' Bland in 1974 and another with Eric Clapton in 2000. Lyrics Now here it is, three o'clock in the mornin' Can't even close my eyes. Oh, three o'clock in the morning, baby Can't even close my eyes. Well I can't find my baby Lord, and I can't be satisfied. Lord, I've looked around me Well, my baby can't be found. Well, looked all around me, people, Well, my baby can't be found. Well, if I don't find my baby, I'm going down to the bowlin' ground. (That's where the mens hang out at.) (Well I'm bound to find her.) (Come here, baby.) Well, goodbye everybody, Lord, I believe this is the end. Oh, goodbye everybody, Lord, I believe this is the end. Well you can tell my baby, To forgive me for my sins.
