Save Income Tax on Capital Gains: Tax on STCG is 10% on profits you make on financial year, and tax on LTCG is 10% on profits above Rs. 1 Lac in financial year. The limit of Rs. 1 Lac can be used efficiently to save income tax on capital gains also called as tax harvesting loss. We are liable to pay tax on such capital gains we get by selling stocks on equity mutual funds on financial year basis (April to March cycle). Types of Capital Gains in India There are 2 types of capital gains in India: 1. STCG or short term capital gains: when you hold stocks or equity mutual funds for less than 1 year and you make profits by selling them, the profits made are called short term capital gains. 2. LTCG or long term capital gains: when you hold stocks or equity mutual funds for more than 1 year and you make profits by selling them, the profits made are called long term capital gains. We have to pay income tax on such gains apart from our regular income tax. What is STCG tax rate? Profits made via STCG is taxed at 15%, irrespective of your Tax bracket. What is LTCG tax rate? Profits made via STCG is taxed at 10% on profits above Rs. 1 Lac in FY, irrespective of your Tax bracket. Things to remember during Tax Harvesting: 1. Exit load: We have to consider exit load on mutual funds while selling them as some mutual funds apply some penalty as exit load on % of your holding while you sell them within 30 days or 1 year. 2. Lump sum Investment: When we sell to book profits and buy back same stocks or mutual funds (buy back) we have to make sure that specific mutual fund allow the lump sum investment. Some mutual funds do not allow lump sum investing but only allow SIP 3.
