Tapasya 50 - "Engage to Educate" - A special episode - Sridevi Nrithyalaya - Bharathanatyam Dance

Tapasya episode 50 - "Engage to Educate" In this episode of Tapasya, we delve into the dynamics of the special relationship between a student and their Teacher. The students featuring in this episode of Tapasya are the kids selected to learn a Varnam composed by Madurai Sri R. Muralidharan. This episode covers how we keep beginner level students interested in classes through a play-way method by incorporating small games and activities to keep them involved with the learning process and help them hone their skills. 0:00 Expression of gratitude 0:27 Introduction 0:57 Children's expression for charana pallavi of a Varnam Singer - Mridula Sivakumar 1:44 'Teaching' - An art in itself 1:58 Explanation of first charana swara sahithyam 3:40 Best way to handle students 3:54 Children attempting abhinaya on the spot 5:08 Teaching beginners 5:29 50th episode special tasks 5:51 Thattu-sit! That's it! This game is to sharpen the alertness of the students and make Thattadavu more enjoyable. How to play the game: *The teacher will call out any number from 1 to 8 in a random order and the students have to do that Thattadavu. *Each Adavu will be done only in one speed and the Adavus will follow the sequence of 1st speed, 2nd speed and 3rd speed only. *After every third speed, they should sink to Muzhumandi for 8 counts and come back to Araimandi for 8 counts. *Those who make a mistake by taking the wrong Adavu or speed will have to sit down. Hasta Kreeda This game is designed to challenge the muscle memory of the body using Hastas. How to play the game: *Students can be asked to recite the Hastas in reverse order (in this case, from Katakamukham). *This game is challenging and fun only when it is done in one attempt. So, no second chances allowed! Saa Boo Rasa This is based on the famous 'Saa Boo Three' which is a toss-like game, based on chance and luck. How to play the game: *On the count of three, each of them should choose a Rasa out of the Nava Rasas and freeze in that expression. *If two or more people are seen doing the same Rasa, then they are out of the game. Dance Charades This is a game of Dumb Charades, but based on characters from SDN's Dance Dramas. We have chosen the dance dramas - Srinivasa Kalyanam and Vande Mataram for the game. How to play the game: *Whisper the name of a character into the student's ear. *The student enacts it with actions and expressions of that character, without the use of words or dialogues. *The other students do the guessing. *This game can also be played in teams with points to make it more interesting. Hasta Katha: This is an attempt to weave a story with Samyutha Hastas in its original sequence. How to play the game: *Either the teacher can narrate a story by weaving a sequence or the students can be made to come up with stories on their own. *This enhances the creativity and lateral thinking of students and also makes them remember the Hastas in a fun way. Bhaavadzap: Similar to Adzap where a group of people will be asked to advertise a product, here the students, as a group, will be given a story to enact on their own. How to play the game: *Depending on the story and number of students, they can be divided into groups. *Here, all the students are in one group as the story given - Sita Swayamvaram- demands many characters. *The students themselves should decide the casting among themselves and plan a sketch of the scene within the given time and enact it. Tapasya - the training sessions, is a series of videos that will be published on a monthly basis (as episodes) on the last day of every month. The students featuring in Tapasya series have about 6-8 classes every month. Each episode of Tapasya is a cumulative overview of what is taught to them during the course of the month. Along with the training sessions of the children, Tapasya also holds inputs on teaching techniques from Smt. Sheela Unnikrishnan and useful tips from the regular performers of Sridevi Nrithyalaya.
