Travel Photo Critique: Get out of Auto!

If you want me to give some of your travel photos a critique, set up a flickr album with 5-10 images. Then, head over to http://www.Brendansadventures.com and send me the link to the album via the contact page! This critique is done of the travel photography of Ric Gazarian of http://www.hittheroadindia.com About the Video: Like any photo critique, I take the images presented to me for the first time and assess them and try to give some pointers on how to make them better. I tend to prefer giving critiques by seeing the images for the first time which allows me to be more direct on my first opinion on the photography. The work of Ric Gazarian, for the most part, was very good. However, as I got through the images a little bit more I started to notice that many of the images were shot on Auto. Well, actually the Program mode of the Canon camera he was shooting on. Essentially, program is an auto mode that doesn't shoot off the flash. It selects the aperture as well as the shutter speed. It basically leaves the photographer without any control over the shot other than the composition. Many new photographers prefer to shoot P-mode (Program) because they're worried that they'll miss shots if they spend their time fiddling with the controls. However, though P-mode will certainly ensure you get the photo, it will likely also inhibit you from getting a great photo. If you want to shoot great travel photos, you need to get out of Auto! Anyways, this was perhaps a perfect photography critique in terms of the fact that the images were good but all needed a bit of work. It allows me to show you all the little things that make a photo great. The only way to improve as a photographer is to have people criticize your work. Of course, it also helps a lot to have watch a professional travel photographer critique anyone's work. Anyways, stay tuned for more critiques. And if you want me to take a look at your work, be sure to send me some images. I'll go easy, I promise.
