Martin Luther King, following the example of W.E.B. Du Bois, pursued integration with whites on an equal basis. He sought cooperation with sympathetic white leaders and pledged himself to the doctrine of nonviolence. Malcolm X, in the tradition of Marcus Garvey, saw a better solution in black nationalism. Like our Founding Fathers, Malcolm X refused to embrace nonviolence and swore to uphold his rights by any means necessary.
