Ulster-Scots Music Traditions: Handmade in Ulster

The history of the Lambeg drum spans hundreds of years but today in Ulster there are only a small number of individuals to be found when it comes to the construction and design of this unique instrument. These skilled artisans and craftsmen each have their own particular processes and methods of crafting the drum but all draw on the traditional methods that have been handed down over the generations. Raymond Davis is just one of these talented craftsmen who – in his own words – is “a humble pensioner who likes working with drums”. In this film, Raymond shares his own experiences with growing up around Lambeg drums before he takes viewers through the processes that go into making a drum. ‘Handmade in Ulster’ is the next instalment in the Ulster-Scots Music Traditions series which looks at the history and culture of the Lambeg Drum and Fife. The series is produced by Third Street Studios in partnership with the Ulster-Scots Agency, and with support from Northern Ireland Screen’s Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund.
