The Westgate ventilation shaft, in Ealing, is one of five shafts along the Northolt Tunnel route of HS2. The ventilation shaft is a vertical opening that connects the tunnels to the surface and open air. It regulates air quality and temperature in the tunnel, provides access for emergency services, and allows smoke to be extracted in the event of a fire. The team are currently half way down the shaft as they excavate London clay and are now at the spray concrete lining phase which involves digging one metre sections of grounds and spraying concrete onto the walls.
