Having come through the ranks at United, Hughes enjoyed three years of first-team football at Old Trafford before moves overseas to Barcelona and then Bayern Munich. He returned to United for what was a hugely successful spell at the start of the Sir Alex Ferguson era, playing a key role as United ended their long wait for a league title before adding nine more trophies over a seven-year stay. A partnership with Eric Cantona taught Hughes plenty of new lessons about the game, before a switch to Chelsea led to more success in a star-studded team alongside the likes of Ruud Gullit, Gianluca Vialli and Gianfranco Zola. Hughes saw out the latter stages of his career at Southampton, Everton and Blackburn before retiring as a player in 2002.
