#korea #joseon #hangul #sejong #kdrama #koreanhistory #history #historyofkorea (episode 20) In today’s episode, I will talk about King Sejong 세종대왕 and the creation of Hangul / Hangeul 한글, the Korean alphabet. King Sejong, born Yi Do 이도, was the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty. He was the 3rd son of King Taejong 태종 and Queen Wongyeong 원경왕후. He invented Hunminjeongeum, more commonly known as Hangul in 1443. Hunminjeongeum means “The correct / proper sounds for the instruction of the people”. I will briefly discuss Hangul and its creation and reason behind creating it. Although Hangul is the greatest invention in Korean history, the people in power at the time didn’t see it as such and Hangul wasn’t widely used until the end of the 19th century. Chinese characters, Hanja, were used by most except women and fiction writers.
