The Amboy Dukes - Journey To The Center Of The Mind (1968)

For me, nothing really beats the live TV version of this song, which has been on YouTube for years now. Those go-go dancers gyrating behind the band steal the show, more fun to watch than Ted Nugent playing that wild lead guitar intro, bridge and solo. I can't recall a song getting more play on a summer jukebox since "Journey To The Center of The Mind" by Amboy Dukes in 1968. I plunked in plenty of coins to make sure that play was often. The local Buffalo, NY station, WKBW, included it on WKBW Klassics Volume 2, their second Best Hits album that made Top 40 anthology history (WKBW · 30 Klassics being the first). This was AM radio psychedelic rock at its very best and one more reason I believe 1968 was the biggest year for psychedelia and not "the summer of love year," 1967. It is possible there were more psychedelic songs recorded in 1967, I'm not sure, but a lot more became big hits in '68 than in '67 I believe. The Amboy Dukes, Blue Cheer, Vanilla Fudge, Fever Tree, Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, Eric Burdon ... they ruled and were barely the tip of the iceberg of what the year would have to offer into the early part of 1969. I can't imagine anyone successfully dancing to this song, but somehow I managed to pull it off in this video. Enjoy the trip.
