In this lecture, we explore how the Formless aspect of God, which is Pure Awareness expresses itself as the various different aspects of the South Asian pantheon: Shiva, Kali, Krishna etc. These "gods" are "patterns in Consciousness", revealed to the ancient seers of India in deep meditation. Most of us, because of our past tendencies, gravitate to a certain representation of this God that reflects to us our highest ideals of spirituality. Some have a natural fascination for Shiva, the Ideal Renunciant and King of the Yogis who is ever absorbed in the contemplation of the Formless. Others among us prefer the terrific Goddess of the Tantra, Kali, fierce Mother Protectress and Destroyer of Evil. But some of us don't know which God to choose or its necessary at all to choose! Remember: There are two conceptions of the Divine in South Asian spirituality: The Formless Aspect of Divinity which is called Nirguna Brahman, the Being-Consciousness-Bliss Absolute) and the Divinity with Form which is called Saguna Brahman. This second conception is the Personal God of religion that creates, sustains and destroys the Universe, the God that can be prayed to and who bestows grace to devotees. Importantly, Nirguna Brahman, the Formless Godhead and Saguna Brahman, God with Form are not two different things. They are one and the same principle.
