Why Did They Want To Touch The Hem? | What the corner of the garment really about The "corner" or the "hem" of Jesus' garment was mysteriously sought out among the people of His time who needed to be healed. Pastor Charlotte explains how this was not a simple matter of humility or shame as people approached Jesus, but it was on account of a widely known prophetic word from the old testament regarding the coming Messiah. Why did everyone want to touch the hem of Jesus' garment? What was the corner of the garment really about? We see that it wasn't isolated to the woman with the issue of blood for 12 years, but people from all over wanted EXACTLY the same thing, they wanted to touch the hem, there was something about the corner of the garment of Jesus. Matthew 9:20-22: "And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour." Matthew 14:35-36: "And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent out into all that surrounding region, brought to Him all who were sick, and begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well." The corner of Jesus garment, the hem, would have been called in hebrew "the kanaph." The Kanaph is also the word used to say, "wing." The people who sought Jesus and were healed when they touched the hem of His garment were not just reaching for the bottom of his robes in shame or humility, they had a revelation that Jesus was the Messiah promised by God to come to Israel in Malachi 4:2 "But to you who fear My name The Sun of Righteousness shall arise With healing in His wings" They wanted to touch the hem of Jesus garment because they knew that the Messiah had come with healing in His WINGS, in the KANAPH of his outer garment. That is what the corner of the garment was really about. The promise of healing in the wings of the Son of Righteousness who had finally come to redeem His people. So while we look back at the story of the woman with the issue of blood, who had been haemorrhaging for 12 years, and often think she was full crawling on her knees in shameful despair, the reality was, she had a heaven sent revelation that Jesus was the Messiah, and that she would be restored and healed if she touched the wings of the the Son who was prophesied to heal and restore Israel.
