Aphrodite (or Venus if you identify as Roman) is one of the most powerful, recognizable and allegorizible (is that a word?) gods of the Greek Pantheon. She was born from the severed parts of Ouranos, the sky god and fell from heaven into the ocean where she washed up on Paphos, Cyprus. Her sanctuary on Paphos was one of the most interesting and ancient in the Graeco-Roman world. We will talk about Aphrodite’s cosmic nature, the evidence for her connection to the near eastern Ishtar/Astarte, and the history of her sanctuary on Paphos. This is good stuff: let’s get into it!
