Global National: June 21, 2024 | Indigenous peoples frustrated over feds' lack of action on issues

In tonight's top story: This year, the backdrop of Canada's National Indigenous Peoples Day includes an intended apology by the federal government over the system harm inflicted on Indigenous families by the child welfare system. There's still growing frustration over the Canadian government's long list of promises to Indigenous peoples — followed by little action. Heidi Petracek has the story. Two NASA astronauts are preparing to spend more unexpected time in space. Engineers are scrambling to fix issues with the Boeing Starliner capsule, plagued with technical difficulties. The astronauts are stranded, but safe, on the International Space Station. As Jackson Proskow explains, their brief trip into orbit has stretched into nearly a month-long stay. Canada has been keen to find ways to get people into electric vehicles (EVs) and out of gas-guzzling cars that produce harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Governments have been using regulations and subsidies with the goal of speeding up the transition to EVs. David Akin has been investigating the pace of electric vehicle ownership across the country, and he looks at who is benefiting from the incentive programs. In Kenora, Ont., this summer marks the 50th anniversary of the Anicinabe Park occupation. The armed standoff drew international attention in 1974 when members of the Ojibway Warrior Society occupied the park to demand equality and better treatment for Indigenous communities. Now, as Melissa Ridgen explains, organizers are remembering and renewing those original calls to action on this National Indigenous Peoples Day. Plus, the number of heat-related deaths has been on the rise over the past three decades. In fact, data from the U.S. National Weather Service shows that excess heat kills more people than tornadoes, hurricanes and floods combined. Eric Sorensen has more on what parts of Canada are becoming more humid and how it's impacting health. And it's a big day for Edmonton Oilers fans! The team is looking to stave off elimination and force game seven in the Stanley Cup Final. The Oilers have clawed their way back into the series. But tonight's game is a must-win. As Jeff Semple reports, they'll have a raucous sellout crowd rooting for them.
