The Parable of the Prodigal Son: Summary and Meaning

The story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15 is one of the most memorable parables in the Bible. In it Jesus teaches the true meaning of mercy and forgiveness. Here is a brief summary of the parable of the Prodigal Son: 1. A man had two sons. The younger son asked his Father to give him his share of his Father's inheritance. 2. The younger son (the prodigal son) spent all of what his Father gave to him on selfish ways of living. 3. The son hit a low point in life when he realized even pigs had more to eat than him. He resolved to return in humility to his father, not as a son but as a hired worker. 4. His father was filled with compassion and ran to his son with open arms to welcome him home. 5. The older son was jealous of the younger son when the father forgave him. The word "prodigal" means spending money recklessly and wastefully. "Prodigal" comes from the original Latin word meaning "lavish," as in "extravagant," "rich," or "luxurious." The word can also refer to someone who leaves home and behaves recklessly just like the younger son in the story. What does the Parable of the Prodigal Son mean for us today? One of the best ways for us to read this story today is to imagine what it is like to be each one of the characters in the story. This will help us understand the meaning of this parable for us today: Younger Son - When have you been like the younger son? - What sin have you committed and are you prepared to echo the words of the son in your own prayer: "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I am no longer worthy to be called your [son/daughter]." Father - When have you been like the Father? - Who is the prodigal in your life? - Are you ready to welcome him/her back with open arms? Older Son - When have you been like the older son, who was always faithful to the Father yet unable to forgive his brother? - Who do you need to forgive in your life? Father, forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us! SUBSCRIBE for more Catholic videos: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c...
