The fermented suint method

Cleaning raw wool using no more than water and warm weather (and a large container with lid). As both a brewer, and a soap maker, I had quite a kick out of this project! Fermenting soap to clean wool, who wool-da thought! For our SCA peeps: It is not entirely clear if this method was used in period. There is little evidence for methods used to begin with, apart from using urine in especially Roman times, and there is nothing for, or against, using this one. It seems a very self-evident method to use at it is so low in material and effort, eccept for the use of a large container. It has been postulated that access to large vats might have been the problem preventing earlier people from using this method (I would not want to re-use anything that has been used for this either), same as limited access to large kettles limited general brewing volume. It is my thought that similar types of vats as used for processing hides, as well as dyeing both hides and wool, could have been used. Still in use in less developed countries, lime lined pits should work just as well for soaking raw fleece as it would for dyeing it. But until we have proof, all this is just conjecture :) If you do know more about the early history of suint, please share!
