Bartolomé de las Casas was a 16th Century Dominican monk, who in his youth was part of the oppressive Spanish Colonial regime in Hispaniola. The Dominican order he joined became horrified to discover the conditions and treatment of indigenous people by their Spanish conquerors and during a fiery sermon by Fra. Antonio de Montesinos he was confronted by the power of his words. This speech, probably the first social justice speech in modern European history, would hang heavy on his conscience and eventually convince him to become a champion of Indigenous rights - travelling to Spain to battle the greatest pro-slavery intellectuals and powerbrokers - even accusing the king himself of negligence.
