The Incredibles Orchestral Medley - DPops (2018)

The Incredibles Orchestral Medley by Michael Giacchino arr. Hendrik Kits van Heyningen '14 ed. Tim Laciano '15 & Chenyu Ma BF'19 Director Brad Bird’s beloved 2004 Pixar film The Incredibles captured our hearts with its refreshingly nostalgic depiction of superheroes, its dry wit, and its disarmingly lovable and down-to-earth family. The film is set in a futuristic alternate-reality 1950s-1960s, and composer Michael Giacchino was tasked with evoking this retro feeling. His score, filled with bold brass features and old spy movie tropes, inevitably pays homage to John Barry, the great 1960s spy movie composer, but it is also a decidedly fresh and multi-faceted score that expresses a wide variety of musical colors. In The Incredibles Medley, I have attempted to capture the versatility of Giacchino’s score while simultaneously taking us on a journey through the plot of the film. We begin with brass proclamations and growling sax solos in “The Glory Days,” introducing us to the main motivic and thematic elements of the piece along with the heroic music of Mr. Incredible’s heyday, his run-ins with the wannabe hero Incrediboy, and the more romantic music expressing his love for Elastigirl. A flute solo mysteriously beckons us with an exotic job opportunity in “Adventure Calling,” and we soon find ourselves in a triumphant brassy swing in “Life’s Incredible Again” as Mr. Incredible revels in reliving his former glory. “Off to Work” represents a change of mood with its smooth jazz feel and seductive string rhythms, taking us to the island while Mr. Incredible sips mimosa and lives the high life. But this quickly evaporates with the ominous “Kronos Unveiled,” as we come to the shocking realization that the company is killing superheroes and Incrediboy has become the evil Syndrome. The whole family is now on the island, and we reach a dizzying level of tension in “100 Mile Dash” as Mr. Incredible is captured and his son Dash frantically tries to escape guards. “Lithe or Death” allows us to take a deep breath with its sorrowful string melody chronicling Mrs. Incredible’s attempts to free her husband, but soon we are back in the tension-filled battle with the Omnidroid and Syndrome in “Saving Metroville.” Finally, the tide is turned, the day has been saved, and we are off to the races in “The Incredits” for a truly superheroic finish.
