Nimueh takes Merlin away from his mother when he is a baby and raises him to have a deep hatred for the Pendragons. When he is old enough, he makes it his mission to end the Pendragon reign by murdering both the King and his heir. Merlin becomes Uther's manservant and kills him slowly over time by poisoning his food. He has his sights set on Arthur after the King's death and fully intends to finish what he started. Over time however, he finds himself getting attached to Arthur and others in Camelot and struggles to fufill his promise to Nimueh. When he sees in the Crystal Cave that he is destined to kill the woman who looked after him all his life, Merlin's world view is shattered. He begins to questions everything. After a fight, Arthur is mortally wounded and Merlin realizes that he can not stand by and watch the man die. He faces off against Nimueh and decides that he will no longer be an instrument in the destruction of Camelot. After defeating her and taking the cup of life, Merlin returns to a burning Camelot, that had been attacked while its King was weak. He manages to bring Arthur back to full health, but reveals his true identity and previous motives in the process. Feeling betrayed, Arthur throws Merlin in the dungeons as he attempts to come to terms with all the wrongs the man has commited against the Kingdom and his own father. Through a serious of events, Merlin tries to prove himself a changed man, but Arthur isn't sure if anything the sorcerer could do will ever be enough. Song: Gallows by Katie Garfield
