Everything I Own

Before I get to the main thing here, my bad for my getting confused on the penultimate couplet of the lyric; I accidentally said “hold you” in place of “have you” and then failed to make it work by quickly following it with “once again”. Instead, it came out “hold you…back again”. Didn’t exactly mean that. As a governor of Texas once said, “Oops.” Oh crumb, another oops. I just realized I said "What's it of" rather than "What it's of" in verse two. Anyway. I’ve badly misjudged and underappreciated many worthy artists down the years. I owe David Gates an apology. I always saw this tune as just another pop song, beautifully recorded and sung (as all of Bread’s songs were), but with what I dismissed as a bad line of lyric in the chorus. I’d mock the idea of being willing to lose one’s life to get someone back, how silly and illogical that was, etc. etc. Well, just recently I read the whole lyric, was surprised by it, then researched the song and found out it was written about his recently-lost father. It’s a true song about grief, and about the regret of not saying things in time. A sincere cry from the heart, not a Tin Pan Alley bit of “product”. If I’d taken the time to listen more intentionally instead of making snap judgments, maybe I’d have realized that about the record. Two late-in-life reflections: first, maybe that line is illogical. So what? It’s generally unkind and pointless to judge too harshly anyone in deep grief for what they say or do. I think most of us aren’t at our most clear-headed at such times. Besides, giving up this life in exchange for reunion with a loved one in the afterlife isn’t illogical anyway, if one has faith in that sort of thing; I don’t, but many do, and that sort of trade-off it isn’t an irrational notion for them at all. If I’m not mistaken, David Gates is a Christian. Third point: until paying attention to the whole lyric, I never really heard the warning about taking the opportunity for showing love while it’s still there. Well, nowadays I couldn’t agree with that one more. Excellent advice! Begging your pardon, Mr. Gates, for my not getting it for so long. You wrote a heartfelt and beautiful tribute. Glad I came to appreciate it while I'm still around!
