“AI is made possible by how much data can be stored digitally. It’s the lifeblood of artificial intelligence and machine learning, and magnetic disk drives consume a lot of energy. If we could reduce that energy by 100 times using racetrack memory, we would have made a huge impact,” remarked Professor Stuart Parkin, in response to a question on how his research could shape the future of AI. In his plenary lecture, Prof Parkin tracked the evolution of knowledge storage, from the first printed book to magnetic disk drives, and his own research journey, which took off with his pioneering work on spintronics. With much excitement, he also outlined to the audience his ongoing research on racetrack memory, skyrmions, and triplet supercurrents – all of which have far-reaching implications for data storage, quantum computing, and global energy consumption.
