(19/3/2017) M&D Invictaway 5454 Leyland Olympian coach C454GKE - RetroBus Running Day - Winchester

Maidstone & District branded their coach services as "Invictaway" in early 80's, and introduced 14 Leyland Olympians from 1983 to 1986, to enhance the service. 5454 is the last of them. In the coach form, the wheelbase has been stretched from 4953mm (5639mm for long wheelbase model) to 6528mm, resulting in a 11.2m long, 73-seat double deck coach. To better suit highway cruising, a high-power version of Leyland's own 11.1-litre turbocharged TL11 engine, rated at 260bhp, is fitted. The gearbox is a 5-speed Hydracyclic semi-automatic unit, with integral retarder. The performance was quite good, but the rear suspension was hard and bouncy, not sure if it was faulty. While the livery and interior trim are attractive, the same cannot be said for the exterior. The front grille and doors are nice touches, but the sloped flat upper windscreen really does not fit in well with the generally rounded body, especially the curved lower windscreen. To me it looks as if the front dome has been cut off from a standard ECW-bodied Olympian. The revised version debuted in 1984, with bonded glazing, deep wrap-around windscreen and a "continental" look, is much more impressive. Thank you for watching!
