In a showdown for the Undisputed Light Welterweight Championship, undefeated 24 year old “Super” Zab Judah took on Kostya Tszyu aka the "Thunder from Down Under". The following titles were on the line; 1) IBF Junior Welterweight Title (Judah’s 6th defense) 2) WBA Super Lightweight Title (Tszyu’s 2nd defense) 3) WBC Super Lightweight Title (Tszyu’s 5th defense) Prefight records; Tszyu 27(2)-1, Judah 27(21)-0. Entering the fight, the 3-1 betting favorite Zab had notable wins over Reggie Green, Terron Millett, Junior Witter & Darryl Tyson while the underdog Kostya had triumphs over top oppositions such as Sammy Fuentes, Jake Rodriguez, Roger Mayweather, Calvin Grove, Diosbelys Hurtado, Miguel Angel Gonzalez, Sharmba Mitchell, Oktay Urkal & Rafael Ruelas as well as over past prime versions of Juan Laporte, Livingstone Bramble & Julio Cesar Chavez. In round 1, both fighters began carefully; Tszyu moving forward trying to cut off the ring and find the range for his right cross while Judah circled around to set up his counter punching and got the upper hand as he connected with a number of powerful lefts but he was rather reckless with wild lunging shots at times. With about 10 seconds to end the round, Kostya managed to find his distance and landed a right-left combo. In round 2, Tszyu shifted the momentum in his favor as he established his jab and connected with a few rights upstairs while Judah continued to move around to offset the rhythm of his opponent and look for openings. With about 10 seconds left to the bell, Kostya connected with a right cross to the chin shortly after referee Jay Nady separated both men from a clinch which he immediately follow up with another thunderous right cross that knocked the Brooklynite down for the first time in his career. In one of the most bizarre incidents of the sport, Zab went back down as soon he got up; he jumped up immediately before a count was even administered and appeared to be telling Nady he was all right, but his legs instantly turned spaghetti as he stumbled across the ring to hit the canvas once again which prompted Nady to call a halt to the bout. Judah was enraged by the stoppage which he considered unfair and had to be held back by members of his own corner as he attempted to punch and later threw a stool at Nady. Super Zab was consequently slapped with a USD75,000 fine as well as a 6 month suspension by the NYSAC for his post fight behavior. As for Kostya Tszyu, he garnered the IBF, WBA & WBC 140 pound titles with this victory to become the first Undisputed Light Welterweight Champion in 34 years. Note: The last Undisputed Light Welterweight Champion was crowned on April 30th 1967 when Takeshi Fuji scored a stunning KO2 victory over Sandro Lopopolo to win the WBA & WBC Light Welterweight Titles in Tokyo, Japan. It is certainly interesting to note that both Tszyu and Fuji became Undisputed Light Welterweight Champions via 2nd round stoppages 3.4 decades apart! Hope you guys enjoy this highlight of an unforgettable encounter with a DELAYED REACTION KNOCKOUT and remember to SUBSCRIBE for boxing awesomeness! Thanks for watching and keep punching.
