Five to Eleven was a popular television programme on BBC1 which ran between 1986 and 1990. Different celebrities of the day presented poems or short readings in a simple format. The programme was screened at 10.55 each weekday morning. Each episode was approximately four minutes in length. Here Edward Petherbridge presents poetry and prose on different stages of life, from birth through to old age and death. In this first episode he reads Cecil Day-Lewis's poem 'The Newborn' and a stanza from Wordsworth's 'Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood'.
