Anatomy of Movement Of The Hip - Everything You Need To Know - Dr. Nabil Ebraheim

Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes the motion of the hip. Muscles and nerves involved in hip motion. The hip moves in three different planes: 1-Sagittal plane- flexion/extension 2-Frontal plane- abduction/adduction 3-Transverse plane- external/internal rotation Normal range of the motion of the hip Flexion-125 degrees Extension- 10-15 degrees Abduction 45 degrees Adduction 30 degrees External rotation 45 degrees Internal rotation 40 degrees. What are the muscles that contributre to hip flexion? There are three muscle: 1-Iliopsoas 2-Rectus femoris muscle 3-Sartorius muscle The three muscles are innervated by the femoral nerve. The iliopsoas, rectus femoris and Sartorius muscles are hip flexors and are innervated by the femoral nerve. What are the muscles that extend the hip? Two muscles extend the hip 1-Gluteus maximus muscle: innervated by the inferior gluteal nerve 2-Hamstring muscles: innervated by the sciatic nerve. What muscles abduct the hip? 1-Gluteus minimus muscle 2-Gluteus medius muscle Both are innervated by the superior gluteal nerve What are the muscles that adduct the hip? 1-Adductor brevis muscle (Anterior or posterior branch obturator nerve) 2-Adductor longus muscle(Anterior branch obturator nerve) 3-Adductor magnus muscle(posterior branch obturator nerve and sciatic nerve) 4-Gracilis muscle(Anterior branch obturator nerve) The obturator nerve supplies these four muscles that adduct the hip. External rotation of the hip Short external rotators and gluteal muscles. Six short external rotators of the hip : 1-Pirifomis muscle 2-Superior gemellus muscle 3-Obturator internus muscle 4-Inferior gemellus muscle 5-Obturator externus muscle 6-Quadratus femoris muscle. What are the nerves that supply the six short external rotators of the hip? The nerve to piriformis innervates the piriformis muscle The nerve to obturator internus supplies the obturator internus muscle and gemellus superior muscles. Nerve to obturator externus from the posterior division of the obturator nerve innervates the obturator externus muscle The nerve to quadratus femoris innervates the quadratus femoris and gemellus inferior muscles. What two muscles does the nerve to obturator internus innervate? 1-Obturator internus 2-Superior gemellus What two muscles does the nerve to quadratus femoris innervate? 1-Quadratus femoris 2-Inferior gemellus Internal rotation What muscle is the primary internal roattor of the hip? Gluteus medius muscle: innervated by the superior gluteal nerve.
