Joseph François Dupleix, governor-general of the French establishment managed to establish a flourishing trading post, with Indian cooperation. However, this success aroused envy and a war between English and French broke out to find out which country would be in control of Pondicherry. Nowadays, 5000 inhabitants have French nationality and a clear inheritance can be seen in architecture, religion and language. From beautiful beaches to precious sandalwood and Lakshmi, the elephant who keeps Ganesh’s temple, everything reminds us that Indian traditions remain important and that the delights to discover in Pondicherry are endless.
