Pitfall II for Atari 2600, finished in 9:47.5 on console with perfect score by Chris "cak" Knight on Oct 10 2012 author notes (Dec 5 2012): I had never played Pitfall II or even an Atari before this year and only took interest in the game after installing an Atari emulator on my Wii. I soon looked up Doug Korekach's world record at Twin Galaxies and decided it'd be fun to try and equal his time of 10:08. For weeks, it seemed an unlikely goal, but after eventually equaling his record, I decided to buy a real Atari and go for a true perfect record. Game research was a little difficult without the use of an emulator with TAS capabilities, but I was able to make due with PC screen recording software and, later on, the Gameboy Advance version of Pitfall II (which can be played in a TAS-capable emulator). I was still finding little improvements up until the last minute; the last two I found were in the final "bats and condors everywhere" section of the game, which required pixel-perfect movement to run under two of the bats, thus reaching the last frog a full 4 seconds early. I'm 99% certain the game can't be played any faster; perhaps if/when Bizhawk (a popular TAS emulator which now plays 2600 games) can support Pitfall II's internal chip, I will make a TAS just to be sure, but until then I'm more than happy with this speedrun. There are several places in the run where it looks like I lose time by stopping, but it's important to note that all enemies operate on a global clock, so arriving at a bat or condor early would result in "backtracking" which is actually worse than stopping. Anyway I hope you enjoy watching the run as much as I enjoyed playing it. :)
