Straddling Blackfella & Whitefella Laws | Bess Nungarrayi Price

Bess Nungarrayi Price is an Indigenous leader whose voice needs to be heard more widely. "When we follow our own law we break whitefella law. When we follow whitefella law we break our own. Too many of my people want what whitefellas have but don't want the law that goes with it...Individual human rights are a western invention. These people are free, rich and educated but they would rather we lived with daily violence and died young, that we lived in poverty and ignorance rather than lose their idea of what our culture should be...We need to learn the best of what whitefellas have brought to us and make it our own. It belongs to all of us and not just to whitefellas...We need to take responsibility for our own problems but we can't do that without changing the law. Only we can do that, it can't be done for us..." - Bess Nungarrayi Price Bess was born at Yuendumu. Her first language is Warlpiri. She also knows Luritja and Western Arrente. Bess has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Aboriginal Community Management and Development from Curtin University, and has worked in a variety of fields including education and training, translating and public administration. Bess will be joined by her husband Dave Price, with whom she runs Jajirdi Consultants, giving practical training and advice to Aboriginal communities and those who work with them. Dave has over twenty years experience working in Aboriginal training and public administration in the NT, the Kimberley in WA and South Australia. He has qualifications in secondary and special education and a Master of Letters in Linguistics from UNE. 💬 Join in the conversation in the comments. 👍 Like this video if you enjoyed it and want to see more, it really helps us out 🔔 Subscribe to our channel and click the bell to watch our videos first ⏲️ Missed this event live?
