What compels a group or an individual to choose terrorism as a strategy to advance a cause? Dr. Max Abrahms will engage participants in an exploration of the nature of terrorism through historical and current perspectives. His research focuses on the consequences of terrorism, its motives, and the implications for counterterrorism strategy. Abrahms has published several related works on these topics, including ìThe Political Effectiveness of Terrorism Revisited,î Comparative Political Studies, forthcoming; ìWhat Terrorists Really Want: Terrorist Motives and Counterterrorism Strategy,î International Security, 2008; and ìWhy Terrorism Does Not Work,î International Security, 2006. Currently, Abrahms is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University. He has also held fellowships at Dartmouth, Princeton, Stanford and West Point military academy. Abrahms received his Ph.D. in Political Science from UCLA; his M.Phil. in International Relations from St. Antonyís College, Oxford University; and his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania (Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa).
