Born in 1271, Queen Isabel was married to King Diniz (or Dinis)of Portugal who was a poet and a troubadour.Elizabeth, who was very pious, was shocked with her young husband licentious life, and promised herself that she would do everything in her power to make her husband mend his ways.Saint Elizabeth of Portugal dedicated her life to the poor. She established orphanages and provided shelter for the homeless and the lepers. She also founded a convent in Coimbra. Dinis of Portugal ,the Poet King , was the eldest son of Afonso III of Portugal by his second wife, Beatrice of Castile, and grandson of Alfonso X of Castile (known as the Wise) As a devotee of the arts and sciences, Denis studied literature and wrote several books on topics ranging from government administration to hunting, science and poetry, as well as ordering the translation of many literary works into Galician-Portuguese (Portuguese had not yet fully evolved into a distinct language), among them the works attributed to his grandfather Alfonso X). 137 of the songs attributed to him,(king Denis), in the three main genres of Galician-Portuguese lyric are preserved in the two early 16th-century manuscripts, the Cancioneiro da Biblioteca Nacional and the Cancioneiro da Vaticana .Denis succeeded his father in 1279. His marriage to Elizabeth of Aragon, who was later canonised as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church, was arranged in 1281 when she was 10 years old.Denis was essentially an administrator and not a warrior king. Denis ruled Portugal for over 46 years.and is remembered as a major contributor to the formation of a sense of national identity and an awareness of Portugal as a nation-state.( source Wikipedia).
