The Newcastle-under-Lyme Canal

The Newcastle canal was established by a 1795 act of parliament and opened in 1800. It ran from a junction with the Trent & Mersey Canal near Stoke, passing under the town in a tunnel, and to avoid the high ground of Hartshill, ran south towards Trent Vale before turning north and terminating near Brook Lane. The canal was acquired by the North Staffordshire Railway in 1863, and continued in use. It was closed in stages between 1921 and 1935, drained and filled in. The last part to survive, a short stub from the Trent & Mersey was removed by construction of the A500 in the 1970s. Today there is little to see, but some tantalising hints remain, as I will try to show in the photos that follow. These were mostly taken during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021, as part of my permitted daily exercise. The second black and white photo is the old footbridge over the canal near The Villas, London Road, Stoke All photos by me unless otherwise stated. Music: Shine A Light, written and performed by Jay Jackson, from the album In The Coalhole, used with permission.
