Aquaponics and a New Way of Thinking | Sam Fleming | TEDxCharlotte

Our city (and world) faces a set of issues that will impact generations to come…education, health, environmental sustainability and a growing divide between people in general. At the same time our city is growing at a rapid rate, and because of this many of Charlotte’s most cultural amenities have disappeared in exchange for traditional development…couple that with the last couple of years of dealing with civil unrest, HB2, and other nationally recognized stories, it is not a stretch to say Charlotte has an identity crisis on its hands….some would say that besides big business, Charlotte has never had a true identity that is unique to our city alone. I want to present an idea that takes on all four of the first mentioned issues, and allows us to craft a true identity for our city, and for all of the right reasons. It revolves around aquaponics as a vehicle for educational transformation in our city. I play in a regional touring metal/punk rock band called The Dirty South Revolutionaries. I also host karaoke at NoDa 101. I enjoy going out and drinking, gardening, seeing live music, fishing….and I really like cats. I am a local musician with no college education. I have now found myself teaching in correctional centers, schools and also in Haiti as well as running a non-profit and co-owner of the Seeds on 36th: Urban Farm Store. I am very candid, and that can push boundaries on its own. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
