Beverley D. Thorne was widely known as the Man of Steel in architectural circles. During his early career he also went by David Thorne and was known in the San Francisco Bay Area and greater design world for his modernist architecture, sleek mid-century designs, and innovative use of steel and glass in residential houses. In the 50’s, Thorne designed the Brubeck House for jazz musician, Dave Brubeck, which initially put him on the map. He garnered attention again in the 60’s when he designed Case Study House #26 as part of the Case Study House Program through Arts & Architecture magazine, and which included other architectural greats such as Charles and Ray Eames, Richard Neutra, Pierre Koenig, and more. A humble man and a Bay Area hero, Bev Thorne is distinctly remembered for his timeless designs, choice of building materials, incredible work ethic and enduring love of architecture. Beverley D. Thorne, Architect, 1924 – 2017, American. Bev was the last living Case Study Architect. Bev leaves behind a legacy of modern architecture for the masses. He used prefabricated materials to cut down on construction costs, creating relatively inexpensive homes, a principle made famous in the Case Study House Program. Millennium House was his final residential project, a project 18 years in the making! Over his career, he designed over 200 homes. Dedicated and upbeat, Bev would often say "onward and upward!"
