Vocab for Freelance Illustrators | How to Speak the Language in the Commercial Art Industry

What's a brief? Who's an AD? What's meant by sketches? What's a deliverable? When you're first starting out in illustration, or considering launching a creative career as an artist, it can be intimidating to think of communicating with other industry professionals. How do you know what's expected and whether you're ready? I know when I was starting out, I was really nervous about knowing industry-specific terms and having the right vocabulary so that I would seem like I knew what I was doing. I spent countless hours googling phrases I'd see in client emails because I was too embarrassed to ask what they meant. Let me save you from that fate and share 8 of the most commonly used industry terms in illustration. Please bear in mind that these specifically apply to packaging and editorial illustration, which are my specialties. Other areas such as animation and surface pattern will have their own terms, so this video is a far cry from universal, but it should provide a good starting point!
