Jurassic Park (Sega CD) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Sega's 1994 license-based adventure game for the Sega CD, Jurassic Park. Unlike the cartridge-based games based on the 1993 Hollywood blockbuster, Jurassic Park for the Sega CD isn't an action game. It is a point-and-click adventure that focuses on puzzle solving and exploration instead of blowing things up, though there are a few short bursts of action peppered in here and there. The game takes place after the events of the movie and novel. You are a InGen scientist, travelling as part of a group to collect the eggs that remain on Isla Nulabar after Dr. Grant and crew managed to escape. As your helicopter approaches, there's an explosion, and you are the only survivor of the crash. You have twelve hours before your ride home appears, and you must complete you mission in this time: you have to find and safely store eggs from each of the dinosaur species on the island, which of course include all of the popular ones from the movie. You play from a first-person perspective, searching for clues and tools in each environment that'll help you to retrieve the eggs. There are plenty of obstacles, ranging from the mundane (a locked door) to the extreme (a T-Rex that will eat you, given the opportunity), and the clock is always ticking. The gameplay combines the corridor-like FMV movement paths of Mansion of Hidden Souls (   • Mansion of Hidden Souls (Sega CD) Pla...   ) with the PC adventure sensibilities of The Secret of Monkey Island (   • The Secret of Monkey Island (Sega CD)...   ) and The Adventures of Willy Beamish (   • The Adventures of Willy Beamish (Sega...   ), and it's a novel approach that made good use of the CD-ROM medium. It's one of the few games that really understood how FMV could enhance, rather than replace, game play. Sega probably would've been wise to invest more resources into projects like this. It's weirdly preoccupied with making you pick up rocks (seriously, there are five that you have to collect and use before the game is done!), but otherwise, the puzzles are refreshingly based in simple logic, and the action sequences don't require too much of your reflexes, but they do a nice job of keeping you on your toes. So do the excellent graphics, which capture the look and feel of the movie as well as anyone could hope to with so few colors. The animated dinosaur models in particular impressed me. Overall, it's not a "difficult" game, but it is an enjoyable one that pays proper respect to its source material. The original Jurassic Park had several good games based on it, but this one right here was my favorite. _____________ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
