Hey guys! Today I talk about one of my favourite authors: Alice Munro. Topics include: where to start with Alice Munro, how to read Alice Munro, and also why the heck more people don’t read Alice Munro! General Advice when reading Munro: 1. Read one of her stories in a single sitting! (Or, at the very least, no more than two!) 2.(And I forgot to mention this in the video) The more Munro stories you read, the more accessible she becomes. She is a genre unto herself, and with each story you read by her, the more you begin to recognize the rhythms and structures and patterns (or lack thereof) she uses to tell stories. Recommended Stories to start with: “The Beggar Maid”: http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/... “The Bear Came Over the Mountain”: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/201... “Chance,” “Soon,” and “Silence” — all of which are featured in her collection Runaway: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... **Please note: Given that the stories are so long, I would definitely print them out or just go get the collections from the library or bookstore. Collections I DON’T THINK you should start with: Dance the Happy Shades The Lives of Girls and Women Further Reading Jonathan Franzen, ‘ “Runaway”: Alice’s Wonderland’ in the New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/14/boo... — A shout out to Amanda at Amanda Centre for suggesting I do this video: / @amandaquotidianbooks You can find me elsewhere at: Twitter: / jakobtanner Goodreads: / jakob-tanner
