Yuzu - The Winter Hardy Citrus

The hardy citrus 'Yuzu' is the most interesting combination of excellent fruit quality and winter hardiness. 'Yuzu', which once established can easily tolerate -9°C , can endure even colder temperatures for a short time. In our climate, 'Yuzu' can also be planted in a wine-growing climate or in a microclimatic location. This winter hardiness, which is surprising for a citrus species, is related to the presumed parents of these citrus hybrids. It is believed that citrus 'Yuzu' originated from a cross between Ichang papeda (Citrus Ichangensis) and the mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata, Satsuma mandarin). Citrus Ichangensis is known for its excellent winter and frost hardiness and the Satsumas can endure some minus degrees. Some botanists also rank the citrus Yuzu as its own citrus species, therefore the competing name Citrus x junos.
