Join Chantal and Howard as they discuss how to retire in Thailand! This interview took place during our last visit to this gorgeous Southeast Asian country, where we met a lovely couple - Howard and Namon who own a beautiful property in Chiang Mai. Howard grew up in Canada and has spent most of his life traveling and living abroad. Even though he’s been stationed in Thailand with his wife for the past 20 years, he’s been coming to the country for over four decades. So, it’s only fair to say that he is sort of an expert when it comes to living and retiring in Thailand. He says that the perks of retiring in Thailand are many - starting from the perfect climate that offers mild temperatures year-round to the wide range of activities for both seniors and young people. Chiang Mai is also known as the culinary capital of Thailand where famous chefs come to learn the traditional Thai ways of cooking. In addition, there are open markets full of locally-grown, high-quality produce, herbs, and spices available at very affordable prices. Despite being a developing country, Thailand is proud of its growth in environmental awareness. You’ll find organic produce grown with no pesticides, and reusable bags more commonly used in the markets instead of plastic ones. The cost of living in Thailand is lower than in the typical “retirement” countries such as Panama or Mexico. This includes accommodation, food, medical care, insurance, and other creature comforts. An interesting fact about Thailand says that it’s the only certified country by the EU for external provision of healthcare. When it comes to security, Thailand is a safe country. With a little common sense you won’t get into any sort of trouble, just like in any other country. Thai people are extremely friendly and eager to help, so even though not everyone speaks English, they will find a way to help you get what you need. Unfortunately, as an ex-pat, you cannot buy land in Thailand, but you can still own property, like a house or an apartment. So, if you are over 50, and this sounds tempting enough, all you need to do is to apply for a non-immigrant visa which you can extend to a year while you are in the country, and renew the stay permit every 12 months for as long as you plan on staying. Hopefully, we managed to bring Thailand and the Thai ways of living close enough for you to at least want to visit this colorful country.
