They are small triangle symbols on the map, and inside is a little puzzle/dungeon to complete. Completing each one allows you to override a certain amount of machines. This means you can make the machine friendly and fight for you for a certain amount of time. The cauldrons are; Sigma, Zeta, Rho and XI. Zeta is the hardest one as you have to fight a Thunderjaw.
