This Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we're highlighting Americans with diverse backgrounds making a difference. Today we feature, Toshiko Akiyoshi and her work "Tuning Up," performed by The U.S. Army Blues. Toshiko Akiyoshi is a Japanese American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader. Her compositions, influenced by both traditional Japanese music and bebop jazz, often feature complex arrangements and unique harmonies. Akiyoshi has been nominated 14 times for Grammy Awards, was the first woman to win Best Arranger and Composer in the 2007 Readers' Poll for Down Beat magazine, and was named NEA Jazz Master by the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts.
