Hanuman Chalisa: A Bharatanatyam Presentation by San Jose Labs and SarvaGuna

Hanuman Chalisa, a devotional hymn, composed by Sant Tulsidas in Awadhi (a dialect of Hindi), choreographed by Mohana Narayan and presented by SarvaGuna School of Bharatanatyam (SarvaGuna.com) dancers. This tribute to Lord Hanuman by SarvaGuna dancers and students is presented through a collaboration with Raga Labs, San Jose. SarvaGuna artists can be reached at:   / sarvagunalearning   This piece exalts Hanuman, for his faith, which resulted from his deep love and profound devotion for Sri Rama. Hanuman is considered to be the embodiment of Divine Faith and is invoked and worshipped by the Hanuman Chalisa—the glorification of Lord Hanuman in forty verses. For centuries, we have recited Hanuman Chalisa for finding peace and solace in adverse conditions, for spiritual enrichment, for success in every walk of life and for attaining the goal of life—Bhakti and Mukti (devotion to God and Liberation). The introductory sloka begins with the word shrī Gurucharan, which refers to the Guru, requesting the Guru to cleanse the internal state of the mind, for after all, all our experiences are a reflection of external situations in our mind. Just as Tulsidas himself pays a tribute to his Guru Haridas, Hanuman himself is considered to be like a Guru who shows us the way to Lord Rama to find the four fruits (phala) of life - Dharma (duty/mission), Artha (independence/prosperity), Kaama (fulfillment of emotional desires) and finally Moksha (liberation from the eternal cycle of re-birth). Tulsidas ji describes Hanuman’s divine qualities in the first 10 verses: his wisdom, strength and courage (physical and spiritual), discipline, and his enduring devotion to Rama. In the next 10 verses, we see the many glorious acts of service or kainkaryam that Hanuman performed not only for Lord Rama and Sita, but also for the Lord’s devotees like Lakshmana (when he brought the sanjeevani herb to revive him), Sugreeva (by helping him forge a friendship with Rama), and finally Vibheeshana (for when he leaves Lanka to surrender to Rama encamped on the shores of the Indian ocean, it is only Hanuman who argues that Rama should accept Vibheesana's friendship even though he is Ravana’s brother). Starting with verse 21, Tulsidas ji describes our need for Hanuman’s grace if we want to reach the Lord. By taking refuge in Hanuman, his devotee is given the strength to overcome all obstacles (without and within us) that prevent us from reaching the Lord. Tulsidas ji concludes by humbly requesting Hanuman along with Sri Rama and Sita to reside in his heart and in the hearts of all of the Lord's devotees.
