Pet Shop Boys - James Bond Demo #2 Restored (The Living Daylights Alternative Unused Instrumental)

There are videos out there with the Pet Shop Boy's instrumental James Bond film demo #2 (not to be confused with the incredible primary demo that became "This Must Be the Place I Waited Years to Leave"), which is how I learned about this track. So let me get this out of the way: I am calling this a restoration, because that is what I set out to do. I pulled in the incredibly lousy quality audio files and tried multiple sources, tried augmenting the instruments, and eventually wound up completely rebuilding the song from scratch with the original as my guide. I tried to maintain the same instruments and be faithful to the original. But in some sections the audio quality was so bad that I had to fill in some blanks and use my imagination of what could have been in the mix, but is no longer possible to hear. Sort of like when a museum reconstructs a dinosaur skeleton and winds up putting in bones they never found. So what you DO hear is a carefully tooled mix of synth engines and drum machines that I painstakingly tried to replicate the original as it would have sounded back in the 80s. And while I know this was just a quick demo never intended for release by the PSBs, I found enough enjoyment and musical creativity that I felt this track needed to be put into a proper listenable format. Sure, it is an extremely dated 1980s poppy track that absolutely sounds very Italo Disco to me, and that is a good thing. Maybe it was not the best fit for a Bond film soundtrack, but it still deserves to see the light of day, just like combing through Picasso's garbage (or Bob Ross, or name any artist) can probably would have wielded some worthy finds. And let me say that I love James Bond, and although Roger Moore is "my" Bond, Tim Dalton is an incredibly good actor and in hindsight was an excellent Bond. Living Daylights is one of my favorites that I saw in the theater when it was released, and it still gives me joy to view it. A-ha's title track is one of the strongest in the entire Bond film franchise history, and certainly is my personal favorite that I insert into my playlists. It is a shame that the Boys were not able to get their music on another Bond film, but history has been written and we all know that more recent Bond films have had hit-or-miss titles, probably more on the miss side. So I hope everyone can enjoy this little artifact of 1980s pop history that wound up on the cutting floor, but is now unearthed, revamped, and hopefully will entertain others as it has done me. Thank you so much for listening! - Austin Apologue, October 2023 #thelivingdaylights #petshopboys #petshopboysdemo #timothydalton #jamesbond
