A Spirited Drive of Leyland 680 Powered Bristol VR EWS753W in Stroud

Another video of me driving the wonderfully raucous EWS753W. This time on roads where I got the chance to "open the taps" a bit, or possibly a lot! I have previously uploaded a short video of this bus before, but filmed on wet and narrow country lanes, where it was impossible to gain the full effect of why this bus is so different to a standard VR. EWS753W is an ECW bodied Bristol VRT, and one of only 30 fitted from new with Leyland 680 engines. I believe that this was due to a lack of availability of the Gardner 6LXB that VRT's of this era were fitted with. As far as I know, the Leyland 501, the other VR engine option, had ceased production by the time this VR was built, hence the 680 being fitted instead. Most of the 30 built had their power units replaced by Gardners at some point during their service life, thankfully EWS753W is one of the two known survivors that retain their original type engines (restored ex Southdown JWV275W being the other). EWS753W was new to Bristol Omnibus in August 1981 as fleet number 5545. It is believed that this batch was part of a diverted order originally intended for Hants and Dorset. It stayed with the company until July 1998, where it was sold for preservation, and remains in "as withdrawn" condition. As much as I love fully restored buses, I think this one needs to stay exactly as it is forever! After several changes of ownership, the bus is owned by Mike Ellis, for the second time, who I am very grateful to for allowing me to drive his bus in order to get the footage seen in this video. Big thanks also go to Mike Ede of the Stroud RE Group, who arranged for this drive to happen. Enjoy the fantastic sound effects as we depart Stroud College, and head towards the M5. For once, I managed to avoid having to edit the footage to remove long periods of waiting at traffic lights etc, with only one short wait to allow a long enough gap in the traffic to perform a short run at maximum speed. I'll apologise now if some of my down changes were a little mistimed, EWS has a very sensitive air throttle, so I found that I either applied far too many revs, or not enough when blipping the throttle.
